A sewer camera inspection feeds a small waterproof camera through your drain line and records what is inside. Book one when drains keep backing up, before you buy an older house, before a renovation, or on a regular schedule if you have mature trees. Oak Bay recommends a camera inspection every one to three years for its homeowners.
What is a sewer camera inspection?
A plumber inserts a flexible camera on a rod or cable through a cleanout or a removed toilet, then runs it along the pipe. The monitor shows the condition of the pipe, and the video can be saved. It also records the distance along the pipe where each problem is, so a repair can be targeted instead of guessed. It does not clear the line, though a plumber often clears it first so the camera can see.
What can the camera show?
- Tree roots entering at joints.
- Cracks, offsets and collapsed sections, where the pipe has moved or broken.
- Scale and corrosion on older cast iron.
- Belly or sag, where the pipe has dipped and collects waste.
- Material and connection details, including where a lateral joins the building drain.
- Whether the blockage is on your side or the municipal side, which matters for who pays. Our guide to sewer lateral responsibility in Greater Victoria has the municipality-by-municipality rules.
When should I book one?
- Repeat blockages. If the same drain keeps backing up, the cause is probably in the pipe and clearing alone will not fix it. See drain clearing vs drain replacement.
- Before buying an older home. Older laterals can be clay, cast iron or other materials that fail with age. A camera check before subjects are removed tells you what you may inherit.
- Before a renovation or addition. Oak Bay recommends a camera inspection before work to avoid conflict with gas utilities, and in the City of Victoria, a building permit over $100,000 on a property with an existing service connection triggers a testing requirement for connections that are older than 20 years, not PVC or of unknown material.
- After a backup or flood. It finds what failed so you can show your insurer and fix the right thing.
- Routinely, with mature trees nearby. Oak Bay recommends camera inspections every one to three years.
What happens during a visit?
- The plumber finds an access point and may clear the line if it is blocked.
- The camera runs from the access point along the drain to the main, recording footage.
- The plumber reviews it with you, shows where any problem sits, and explains the options: do nothing, clear regularly, repair a section, line or replace.
Before any clearing tools or digging near the line, locate buried utilities. Saanich notes that plumbers must contact BC One Call (1-800-474-6886) before using clearing tools to prevent gas line damage.
What does it cost?
We have no sourced Victoria price range for camera inspections, so we do not quote one. The price depends on the length and access of the line, whether it needs clearing first, and whether you want a written report and recording. Ask what is included, and whether the cost is credited if you proceed with repairs.
What should you ask for in the report?
Ask for the recording, a note of the distance from the access point to each problem, the pipe material and size where it can be seen, and a plain statement of whether the problem is upstream or downstream of the property line. If you may need to approach the municipality or your insurer, that written finding is the document they will ask for.
What do the results mean?
- Clean pipe: nothing to do except re-check on a schedule.
- Roots or scale: clearing may buy time; repeat clearing is a signal to plan a repair.
- Cracks, offsets or a belly: repair or replacement, scoped from the footage.
- Problem on the municipal side: your plumber's finding is what you give the municipality. In the City of Victoria, the owner must first have a plumber report that the building sewer is clear before asking the City to clear the service connection.

Frequently asked questions
How often should a sewer line be camera inspected?
Oak Bay recommends routine camera inspections every one to three years for its homeowners. Older lines and lots with mature trees are worth checking more often.
Should I get a sewer camera inspection before buying a house?
It is a sensible step on an older house, because the lateral is the owner responsibility on the private side in every municipality we checked.
Does the camera clear the blockage?
No. It shows what is wrong. A plumber usually clears the line first so the camera can pass.
Can the camera show whether the problem is on my side or the city side?
It shows where along the pipe the problem is, which your plumber can tie to the property line. That helps determine who is responsible.
Do I get a recording?
Many plumbers provide the footage and a short report. Ask when booking.
